Tauranga’s Phil Campbell heads to the final round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, the Trusthouse Racetech Rally Wairarapa, with just one goal in his sights, to take out his first New Zealand Rally Championship title.
After a season long battle in the FIA two-wheel drive class swapping stage and event wins with the identical car of Josh Marston, 26-year old Campbell holds the upper hand with a slender three point lead in what will effectively be a winner takes all shootout.
Campbell is confident of taking out the title with good history at the Masterton based event, having taken his first round career round win on the same event last year and with the newer Letts Construction Ford Fiesta R2 underneath him, knows that nothing less than a repeat victory will suffice.
The Campbell Rallysport team have already wrapped up one title, with Venita Fabbro having amassed an insurmountable lead in the co-driver title race.
“Basically there is only one aim for the weekend and that is to win,” says Campbell. “Wairarapa is an event we enjoy and we have gone well at in the past and I would dearly love to take out an NZRC title.”
Rally Wairarapa leaves Masterton at 7am, taking in nine high speed special stages that cover 134km, mostly based around the country town of Eketahuna, before returning to the ceremonial finish at Solway Park in Masterton just after 5pm.
