Campbell aims to salvage result at Coromandel

Tauranga’s Phil Campbell heads to the final round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, the Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel, looking for a strong result to put a positive end on what has been a tough 2016 season.

After securing second overall in 2015, Campbell was tipped as a favourite for the 2016 title, but the year has been one of frustration for the team.

The team head to Coromandel with optimism despite the tough season, with Campbell claiming the team are now on top of the misfire that plagued them through the previous round, Rally Gisborne, as well as the non-championship Tauranga Rally.

On top of that, the Whitianga-based event has been that one has been kind to Campbell and co-driver Venita Fabbro, taking their first ever NZRC round win in 2014 and a second place last season.

Securing a strong result with The Roofing Store Mitsubishi is not lost on the team, who will be looking to head into the off-season on a high.

“It’s really important for the whole team that we can secure a good result here at Coromandel, everyone has worked so hard and we’ve struggled to get a result to reflect that,” says Campbell. “Having said that, Coromandel has been really good to us, it’s a cool event and it’s really easy to enjoy it when the results are good, so fingers crossed we can keep up the run of podium finishes.”

The Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel takes place on Saturday August 20 based from the holiday destination of Whitianga. Competitors covering 121 kilometres of special stages split into 10 special stages before the ceremonial finish in Blacksmith Lane from just after 5pm.
