Tauranga’s Phil Campbell has confirmed his return to form at the latest round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, the Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel, with a strong fourth placed finish.
Campbell teamed up with experienced co-driver Rocky Hudson for the first time on the event and after a second placed finish at the non-championship Rally of the North, was looking to enjoy the event with the theory that results would follow.
With some small modifications made to the car and a new co-driver, Campbell eased into the opening stage with the 13th fastest time, but from the second stage attacked and set the sixth fastest stage time, pushing him straight back into the top ten.
As the day progressed, Campbell continued to move forward in the increasingly treacherous conditions as his confidence continued to be restored in The Roofing Store Mitsubishi Evo 9, with a fourth fastest stage time on the final stage seeing him move into fourth place for the rally.
“We’re not quite back on the pace we had in 2015 but we’re certainly heading in the right direction, I’m getting so much confidence back in the car and having a lot of fun to go with it,” said Campbell. “It was great to have Rocky in the car, he did a great job and we had some laughs to go with it as well, which certainly helps the cause.”
The Campbell Rally Sport team now turn their focus to building their Ford Fiesta AP4 car for next season, before the Waitomo Rally on October 14.
