Campbell takes second at Tauranga

Tauranga’s Phil Campbell has taken second place at his home event, the Tauranga Clubmans Rally, over the weekend.

Campbell was looking forward to his home event after a torrid run so far in his New Zealand Rally Championship campaign and after a last minute change, teamed up with fellow Tauranga local Mitch James for the event.

The pair made a solid start on stage one, setting the second fastest time, and upped the pace on stage two, edging closer to the pace setter.

A breakthrough fastest time on stage three offered hope of regaining the time given up to the leader over the previous two stages, but the damage had been done despite another stage win combined with five second fastest times, they were unable to catch the leaders.

For Campbell, the second place finish brings a welcome return to the podium after a season of frustration and although he was denied a hat-trick of wins on his home event, the runner-up result offers plenty of encouragement.

“It would’ve been really good to win, but at the end of the day second place gives me a great confidence boost heading to Rally Coromandel in a month,” said Campbell. “I’m really happy with how I drove, I felt it was pretty quick, so full credit to Matt (Summerfield, event winner), he obviously drove really well.”

The Campbell Rally Sport team now turn their focus to the Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel on August 20.
