Less than a month after claiming his first outright podium finish in a national championship event, Rotorua’s Sloan Cox is aiming to repeat the same result at the final round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship at this weekend’s Trusthouse Racetech Rally Wairarapa.
Cox has a good record at the Masterton-based event, recording two podium finishes in the Group N class in the past two editions of the event. This year’s regulations have seen the production based formula banished, leaving Cox and co-driver Sarah Coatsworth chasing an outright podium spot in their Taslo Engineering Mitsubishi Evo 10.
“This is an event that has always treated us well with two Group N podiums the last two times out so we will be aiming to repeat our Possum Bourne Memorial podium finish,” says Cox.
A strong run at the recent Possum Bourne Memorial Rally not only netted the pairing a third placed finish, but third fastest in the power stage which means the pair will have the opportunity to pick an ideal road position at Friday night’s selection draw.
Despite securing a podium finish, Cox had struggled with the handling of the car, but the whole Cox Motorsport team have been hard at work between events and are confident that they are on top of the cars performance heading into the season finale.
“I’m really confident heading into Wairarapa, the team have done a lot of hard work and our pace has been good this season,” says Cox.
Rally Wairarapa leaves Masterton at 7am, taking in nine high speed special stages that cover 134km, mostly based around the country town of Eketahuna, before returning to the ceremonial finish at Solway Park in Masterton just after 5pm.
