Pre Gisborne Event Report by Max Bayley

Hi there

This weekend the 4th round of the New Zealand Rally Championship is being held in Gisborne. There has been a lot of hype about this event as it is being held on iconic roads such as the Motu, Rakauroa, Malawi and Wharekopae.

These four stages are held over 142km. It will be crucial to be on pace all day, because the 4 stages are all over 24km long, so if time is lost in one it will be hard to pick it back up. The Motu road will be a challenge, famously known for its twisty nature, large drops, and whopping 46km length!

I will be teaming up with Lisa Hudson for the first time so I look forward to learning a thing or two! We are seeded as the first 2wd on the road and the aim is to finish that way so we’ll see how it goes! There will however be some tough competition in the 2wd field, with Regan Ross, Marcus Van Klink and Brian Stokes all making the trip up from the South Island. It will be my third time competing at the event, however last time was in 2012.

Currently I’m sitting at 11th overall in the Drivers Championship due to the DNF at Otago, but I am hoping a strong finish this weekend will be able to bump me up a couple of positions. A good result at the next three rounds will shuffle me up a fair bit, with points counting for the best 5 out of 6 rounds.

So you can tune in at www.chrissport.co.nz for live times on Saturday, and www.nzrallychamps.co.nz for live streaming. Cheers for the support from Farmlands, Gulf Oils, Freshmax, VJ’s Distributers, Ultimate Motor Group and John Bates Wheel Alignments.

Thanks Max
