Marcus van Klink, of Christchurch, is gearing up for the final round of the New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC) this weekend where he’ll be going flat out to finish first and put a dent in his rivals’ championship chances.

Van Klink admits that his chances of winning the championship are slim, he can certainly be the fastest on the day and make the historic class championship tougher for the two leading contenders, Deane Buist and Jeff Judd.

“We will be pushing hard to be the fastest and win the rally, and the power stage,” said van Klink, “we’ve had several power stage wins already this season so we’ve had the pace all year, it’s just a matter of making it happen once more.”

After a tough start to the 2013 NZRC season where van Klink and his team were plagued by mechanical issues, the Chesters Plumbing team have bounced back and proven why they were the 2012 historic class championship winners.

“We’re really gutted about how the championship started this year but like they say in rallying, to finish first, first you must finish. Stranger things have been known to happen in this sport so we’re staying positive about this event.”

Since sourcing new parts for the highly powered Chesters Plumbing Mazda RX7 earlier in the season, the car has been faultless and this is demonstrated by van Klink’s strong championship comeback.

Regular co-driver, Dave Neill also from Christchurch, says he is also looking forward to the event and seeing what result the team can come up with.

“I agree with Klinky [Marcus van Klink]. We obviously want to win the 2013 title, and even though that’s unlikely, we’ll be trying our best. You just never know what can happen,” said Neill.

“I’ve done Wairarapa before and the roads are typically quite fast and flowing, which should suit the Chesters Plumbing Mazda again this year. We’ll have a good look at the condition of the roads on recce and see how we go from there.”

Rally Wairarapa will start at 7.00 on Saturday 5th October. The Chesters Plumbing team will then compete across 134 kilometers of closed special stages before finishing at the Copthorne Hotel in Solway at approximately 5.00pm. Rally Wairarapa also doubles as the final round of the NZRC, where crews will be rewarded with championship wins accordingly.

Van Klink’s NZRC campaign is supported by Chesters Plumbing and Bathrooms, AMT Mechanical, Castrol Oil, Universal Plumbing, Buteline Al Marsh Rotorsport and Palmside.
