Dylan Thomson enters his third season in the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship aiming to repeat the success that he enjoyed last season.
After a 2016 debut season, Thomson and co-driver Amy Hudson stepped up the pace in 2017, not only taking victory in the NZRC Two-wheel drive class for front-wheel drive cars up to two-litre, but also the outright Motorsport NZ Two-wheel drive championship and the junior championship.
For 2018, Thomson would love to repeat the success of the previous season, but also has some other goals to tick off the list in what will likely be his final season driving the Total Lubricants Ford Fiesta ST. For the Otago event, that includes the class record on the infamous Kuri Bush stage, which is currently held by Thomson’s car when it was in the hands of mentor Ben Hunt.
The off-season has been a busy one for Thomson, with pre-event preparation mixed with a change of job and moving from Waiuku to Christchurch.
“It’s been a big off-season for us, there’s plenty of changes going on but I feel we’re just as prepared as ever going into Otago,” says Thomson. “That Kuri Bush record is something I’ve always wanted and last year we were certainly trying for it, but we had a bit of scare. Hopefully the rain stays away!”
The Otago Rally kicks off with a ceremonial start in Dunedin’s Octagon on Friday 13 April from 5pm. The action kicks off the following day, with nine special stages south of Dunedin covering 145km of special stages. The following day sees a further 137km of special stages before a ceremonial finish at the iconic Dunedin Railway station from 3pm.
Dylan Thomson Rallysport’s campaign is supported by Total Lubricants, Riordan and West Transport Pukekohe, Drew + Accounting, Harrier Signs, Absolute Spray Painting, Mark Rose Construction, LJ Hooker, Fowler Homes South Auckland and New Zealand, Northwood Beaurepairs, Ford Ultimate Motor Group, Jivan Produce, Dunlop, Hunt Diesel, Ferodo Racing Pads and GHL Tempfence.
