Kaiapoi’s Marcus van Klink is looking for a third win from three events in the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, the Joe’s Garage/Lonestar Rally Canterbury.
In what has been close to the perfect start to the season, van Klink and co-driver Dave Neill have taken victory in the two events to date, Rally Otago and Rally Whangarei.
After a few weeks of hard work to ensure Chesters Plumbing Supplies Mazda RX-7 is in top condition, van Klink is confident that he can once again be in the fight for the lead of the Historic class on his home event, despite a stronger field than seen at the previous event.
Although the event is his home rally, it has not always been kind to van Klink. Three years ago he finished third in the Historic class, two years ago he slipped off on a patch of ice, before finally taking a class win last season.
“It certainly hasn’t been the kindest event to us in the past, but I think we’re as prepared as we can be. We have to be, there is some seriously good competition for the event,” says van Klink. “The Mazda can be quite tricky to drive in the forestry, particularly in the rain, but I’m confident we can get the job done.”
The Joe’s Garage/Lonestar Rally Canterbury Rally Canterbury run on Sunday 5 July. After leaving the start at Rangiora at 7.40am, teams will cover nine special stages in the Ashley and Okuku Forests totalling 171km, before returning to the finish in Manchester St, Christchuch from 5.30pm.
